Academic Programs

A US-aligned medical curriculum, world-class faculty and clinical training across three continents — anchored on Mahé Island.

Academic Philosophy

Medicine is a science. It is also a craft.

At USAIM we believe that the formation of a physician is the work of years, not modules. Our curriculum is structured to teach the science of medicine in the way working doctors actually use it — as integrated, problem-driven, patient-centered knowledge — while at the same time giving students the time, supervision and reflection that real clinical craftsmanship demands.

Practically, this means three commitments. First, an organ-system curriculum modeled on leading US medical schools, with USMLE-blueprinted content woven through every block. Second, clinical exposure beginning in the very first semester — not in the third year. Third, small-group learning as the central pedagogical method, with cohorts capped at 60 students and a faculty-to-student ratio of 1:14.

"Our curriculum is built around a single question: at the end of every block, can our students do something with what they have learned?"

Outside the classroom, USAIM's location offers something no Caribbean medical school can replicate: a stable, English-speaking, multicultural island nation with a national health system and a single tertiary referral hospital just minutes from our campus. Our students don't shadow medicine — they live in it.

USMLE Pathway

Built for the USMLE — From Day One

USAIM is one of the few American-curriculum medical schools outside the United States that has built USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK preparation directly into the core curriculum — not as a parallel commercial product. Every block is mapped to USMLE content blueprints; every assessment is benchmarked against NBME shelf exam performance.

Mapped Content

Each organ-system block maps to USMLE Step 1 disciplines and weightings.

NBME Benchmarking

End-of-block assessments use NBME-style items and are scored against US norm references.

Step 1 Intensive

A dedicated 12-week intensive between Year 2 and Year 3.

Step 2 CK Support

Embedded throughout Year 3 clerkships with end-of-rotation shelf exams.

Step 1 first-attempt pass rate (5-year average): 92%
